LHS has multi-layered vision for its long-term impact on throwers, hammer coaches, athletics clubs, long throws competitions and for the wider community.In order to reach and exceed all of our objectives it is important for the LHS to be properly constituted and to reach the highest certifications and standards.

Club affiliation

In 2026 LHS achieved the status of a fully affiliated athletics club with England Athletics. Our affiliation number is: 7694067. Why is this important?

Being affiliated allows LHS to:

Club standards

In 2026 LHS also acheived Club Standards recognition. England Athletics Club Standards are a set of seven mandatory governance and duty-of-care benchmarks. They are designed to ensure that running and athletics clubs are safe, legally compliant, and welcoming environments. So what are Club Standards?

• Club Standard 1 (Constitution): Having a formal club constitution in place that fits your legal structure and is agreed upon by the committee.
• Club Standard 2 (Committee Roles): Having elected committee members for key administrative positions.
• Club Standard 3 (Grievance & Disciplinary): Maintaining clear, documented grievance and disciplinary policies to resolve conflicts fairly.
• Club Standard 4 (Data Protection): Having an active Privacy Notice that complies with GDPR guidelines.
• Club Standard 5 (Inclusion Policy): Implementing a clear policy that ensures the club is open, inclusive, and accessible to everyone.
• Club Standard 6 (Safeguarding): Ensuring the club signs up for the safeguarding code of conduct, has a Lead Welfare Officer, and uses properly licensed coaches/leaders.
• Club Standard 7 (Health & Safety): Having a defined Health & Safety policy alongside up-to-date risk assessments.

Coaching licence

England Athletics Coaching Licence is the official credential that allows LHS to coach athletics (track & field) in England legally and with insurance. Why do we need a coaching licence?

It proves that the coach is trained, qualified, DBS-checked, and has completed safeguarding training. This is required to coach at affiliated clubs, deliver sessions with children/vulnerable adults, and access insurance. Without it, we cannot fully participate in the structured coaching system. Training sessions

Our training sessions typically last around 2 hours (depending on the numbers) and if we are throwing in the cage, each thrower will have around 15-20 throws each watched by the coach who gives immediate feedback on each throw. Sometimes a session will be 100% drills or technical exercises and sometimes we will spend parts of the session in the gym.

Coaching for coaches

Just as a hammer thrower can get better over time, the same is true for coaches. We often run training days and sessions for coaches (as well as athletes) in which coaches can learn new techniques and shares sucesses (and failures) with others.

Throwing competitions

When you are a member of LHS we will regularly send (via WhatsApp) details of upcoming schools, county, regional or open competitions that you might wish to enter. The message will contain a link to the registration site of the event. Whenever possible Jamie will try to attend competitions to provide on the spot advice and encouragement.

We also encourage athletes to share their competition results with the rest of the squad via WhatsApp. We do not typically publish competition results on this website. Almost all competition results can be found on the UK's Power of 10 results, personal achievement and UK rankings website. When one thrower acheives a new personal best or reaches a selection standard, it can serve as a great boost to the other throwers.
