What we do at London Hammer School
LHS has multi-layered vision for its long-term impact on throwers, hammer coaches, athletics clubs, long throws competitions and for the wider community. We love hammer throwing and want to encourage as many athletes as possible into this amazing and highly technical discipline. We are happy to work with beginners, improvers, club-level athletes, county-level, national-level and international elite throwers.
Throwers cannot learn and improve their throwing without great coaching but today the UK has too few hammer coaches. Our aim is to help existing coaches to offer better coaching facilities and, through mentoring, to help develop the next generation of coaches.
We want to work with as many athletics clubs as we can to make this happen.
High quality coaching
We offer high quality coaching for the hammer, led by the UK's only level 4 hammer coach, Jamie Bath. We work with a network of other coaches in a range of different clubs. We also encourge our more experienced throwers to help those with newer to the event. We also run regular coaching, skills-and-drills events.

Athlete to athlete mentoring
We aim also to use athlete-to-athlete mentoring where more experienced throwers can work with beginners to help them grasp the basics of this complex event. We have throwers right through from beginners to elite-level throwers and we encourage all members to share their experience, what they have learned, the small changes that add distance and drills that can help to lock in better technique.

We encourage all athletes to enter as many competitions as they can through the season. This is where the theory and practice turn into reality, hopefully leading to medals, personal bests and qualification for district, county, regional and even national team selection. Competitions are available through schools and clubs, and there are many 'open' competitions every year across the country which you enter as an individual and compete against a very wide range of other throwers.
